In baseball terminology


in the hole is defined as due up to bat after the on-deck batter. Probably derived from boating, where it was originally "in the hold", the place prior to being "on deck". Language is fluid and many morphed words and phrases become standard and accepted with usage. I’d consider “in the hole” a perfect example!
